Trump admits his disappointment over the failed summit with Putin. He says he will only meet with the Russian president once an agreement on Ukraine can be reached. Anything else would be a waste of time.
US President Donald Trump has rejected further talks with Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin for the time being as long as an agreement to end the war in Ukraine is not in sight. "I'm not going to waste my time," Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One en route to Asia. "I need to know that we're going to reach an agreement (in the war in Ukraine)," Trump added.
The Republican's efforts to persuade Putin to seek peace in Ukraine have recently come to nothing. A planned summit with Putin in Budapest has been postponed indefinitely. "I've always had a great relationship with Vladimir Putin, but this was very disappointing," Trump said. "I thought this would have been resolved before peace in the Middle East." On Wednesday, the US imposed sanctions on Russia's two largest oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil, in light of the lack of progress in Ukraine peace talks with Russia.
Recently, Ukraine's Western allies have tried to increase pressure on Russia. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called on the allies on Friday to supply Ukraine with longer-range weapons. This week, the EU also announced new sanctions against the Russian energy sector in an effort to weaken the country's war economy.
White House has new sanctions in the drawerWhile the US president is on his Asia tour, his administration has already prepared further sanctions, which it could impose on key sectors of the Russian economy if Putin continues to delay ending Moscow's war in Ukraine, Reuters reported, citing a US official and another person familiar with the matter.
US officials have also told their European counterparts that they support the EU's use of frozen Russian assets to purchase US weapons for Kyiv. Furthermore, there have been initial internal discussions in Washington about using Russian assets held in the US to support the Ukrainian war effort, two US officials said.
A senior US official told Reuters he would welcome European countries taking the next major step toward Russia. This could be additional sanctions or tariffs. Another source with knowledge of the administration's internal dynamics said Trump would likely pause for several weeks to await Russia's reaction to Wednesday's sanctions announcement.
